Rosenthal Fresh Food Initiative
Each year, as much as 20% of America’s food (an estimated 130 pounds of food per person) goes to waste. With a growing need in our community, we found a way to ensure that good food ends up in the hands of those who need it the most, instead of in dumpsters and landfills.
The Rosenthal Fresh Food Initiative works with local grocers, restaurants and retailers to collect quality, fresh foods that would otherwise end up in the trash. Those food items, including meat, deli, bread and produce, are delivered to our member agencies, which in turn is then distributed to our hungry neighbors in 20 counties in Ohio, Kentucky and Southeastern Indiana. The Rosenthal Fresh Food Initiative is a way to ensure that quality food is going to good use, instead of going to waste.
Since the program’s inception, we’ve distributed more than 10 million pounds of rescued food to hungry people and families in the Tri-State. 1.6 million pounds was distributed in 2010 alone.
And the program is gaining speed. The number of grocers, restaurants and retailers that have jumped onboard with The Rosenthal Fresh Food Initiative has grown by 70% (an increase of 61 participating stores to 104 participating stores) in the past four years.
Some of the participating grocery retailers include:
• Kroger
• Whole Foods Market
• Bigg’s
• The Fresh Market
• Sam’s Club
• Wal-Mart
We appreciate the efforts of all Rosenthal Fresh Food Initiative partners to help distribute good, edible food to those who need it most.
