USDA Under Secretary Visit

"USDA Secretary Visit."Kevin Concannon, USDA Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, visited with the Freestore Foodbank on Tuesday, January 31. He held a roundtable discussion on hunger and nutrition efforts in the community at the Mayerson Distribution Center in Bond Hill. A small group of business leaders, individuals and program staff and service providers had the opportunity to share their thoughts and insights on what’s happening in the Tri-State and have Under Secretary Concannon take those messages back to Washington D.C. Our thanks to Mr. Concannon for his time!

Programs: KIND

"KIND Program."In January of 2011, the Children’s Pediatric Primary Care Clinic and the Freestore Foodbank launched a program to combat the issue of mothers diluting baby formula to make it last longer. The program is called KIND – or Keeping Infants Nourished and Developing. The program helps doctors to identify food insecurity and connect families with the proper tools to ensure that babies and mothers are getting proper nutrition. To learn more about KIND…Click here.

Neighbors We Serve

"Neighbors We Serve: Nicole."Meet Nicole. Nicole is a single, working mother of three children. She works six days a week to make ends meet, but that’s still not enough to care for her children. Nicole says she doesn’t focus on material things; she just wants to provide her kids with the necessities in life. Nicole doesn’t have dental insurance, and recently took her eight-year-old daughter to a free dental clinic provided by Roselawn Lutheran Church, a Freestore Foodbank Member Agency. Food

Before there can be a conversation on possibilities and potential, we must provide food. It is the single most important foundational element linking all people.

Connection

Addressing hunger allows us to have conversations on other issues affecting individuals, families and communities to help create stability and self-reliance for those in need.

Hope

By connecting those in need to services that create stability, we work to determine the root causes of hunger and poverty and build hope in our community.
